While the hypoxia was somewhat alleviated, the physical and mental exhaustion only grew more intense… Time had finally reached the pre-set thirty minutes—of course, Xiaoyu had no sense of time—and I closed the valve on the rebreather bag for the last time. Then I watched as Xiaoyu, completely unaware and with her consciousness already blurred for a long while, enacted her final struggle. After only a few dozen seconds of prolonged oxygen deprivation, her consciousness slipped into a dark abyss… Interview after several hours of rest: —Me: Have you recovered? —Xiaoyu: More or less… My temples still hurt a bit… —Me: Then, first, can you describe your overall feelings about this experience? —Xiaoyu: Extreme suffering, absolute torment… One word: Brutal! —Me: When the bag was first attached, how uncomfortable was it?
